Joel Miñana works as a fashion illustrator and specializes in drawing live, just as it was done in the 1920s. Joel has become the catwalk illustrator of the moment, a profession in which with notebook and pencil in hand he captures the essence of fashion moments that escape photography.
He combines his work as an illustrator with that of a professor of fashion history and design. And every Thursday the lights of El Palace - his current home studio - are turned on to host a live illustration class.
What are your traditions for the winter holidays?
My traditions are simple and very Mediterranean. Being with family, getting together around a table to eat, remembering anecdotes and creating new ones.
On the other hand, I always like to find a moment to walk around the centre of my city, Barcelona. Those afternoons when the centre is busy under the lights... strolling around the Fira de Santa Llúcia... These are customs that my grandparents cultivated and today I like to repeat them even when they are not there.
What is your favorite part of vacation? During both Christmas and summer holidays, my favorite part is those moments when I don't have to do anything. Just pick up a book or sometimes stretch and enjoy the sky through the window.
Do you prefer “lots of small gifts” or “one or two substantial gifts” when it comes to holiday gifts? For years now, I have been neglecting the gift part. I prefer a thoughtful, quality and long-lasting gift, or I prefer to give an experience like a concert, a dinner or an excursion.
Do you prefer to be a host or a guest? And why? Depending on the number of people. It's easier to be a guest, but with people in my closest circle I like to be a host. I enjoy taking care of my friends and family.
Joel Miñana: the fashion catwalk illustrator. What exactly does your job entail?
My job is to draw live, just as it was done in the first fashion shows. Now, in addition to drawing live at fashion shows, I also do this activity at parties and private events. It is a nice souvenir for those attending.
Where do you find your inspiration for your illustrations? My inspiration comes from everyday life and from details of classic films. I show an ethereal world and, as I am often told, quite glamorous.
What would we always find on your work table?
Lots of pencils and fine ink. Ink is a material that never fails on my desk.
Now living at the Palace Hotel, what is your favorite part of your home-studio?
My favorite part of my studio is the light that comes in in the morning, it is a light that inspires me a lot.
Of all the pencils in your jars, do you have a favourite colour?
When it comes to painting, I think I have a special weakness for the colour blue. It is one of the first colours to be finished.
If you could choose one gift from OEOE Handbags this year, what would it be?
The Harry backpack from the men's collection in black. It would be the perfect backpack to start a new year full of projects.
